Solvay, dear old Solvay: girls teams

The team included Edith Noble (standing in the middle), who went on to have a long career as an art teacher at the school. (See her painting of the Solvay Process rockpile.)

Flanking her are teammates Anna Berlinski (left) and Esther Bryers.

Seated (left to right) are Alma Herrick, Emma Strauss and Bertha Friedli.

According to the 1953 yearbook, Solvay High School had three girls' teams during the 1952-53 school year – basketball, archery and bowling. For boys that year, there were six sports – football, basketball, baseball (all of which had varsity and junior teams), plus track, bowling and golf.

Pictured above are the four members of the bowling team. Left-to-right, they are Gail Harrington. Joan Hewes, Rebecca Housman and Phyllis Monti.

Not pictured are Mary Jane DeStefano, Sandra Parker and Carolyn Molta, who also bowled that year. I think Molta went on to establish herself as one of Central New York's best bowlers.

The 1953 archery team (left-to-right): Salvatrice "Sally" Mollura, Robin Nagy, Georgianna Ryan, Jeanette Martino, Geraldine Kosakowki and Coach Arlene Walter.

Sally Mollura's yearbook photo listed her participation is no less than five sports: archery, baseball, basketball, track and soccer.

Back row: Elizabeth Heckel, Roberta Nagy and Rose Mary Salvatore.

Front row: Annette Artini, Mary Grabosky and Margaret Vanetti.

As I looked through copies of Bearcat Echoes (the student newspaper), it seemed Arlene Walter, who must have coached all of the girls' teams during her many years at Solvay High, had flexible rosters, so yearbook photos may show only some of the students who participated.
