On Geneva field Syracuse players
struggle desperately to down De Sales
GENEVA, Nov. 10 – In one of the most bitterly fought high school battles ever seen in Geneva, Christian Brothrs Academy of Syracuse defeated the St. Francis de Sales High School here today by a score 2 to 0.

The defensive play of both teams was so strong that neither made any material gains. CBA made two points in the third quarter when a St. Francis back was tackled behing his own goal line after receiving a CBA punt.

Every player proved a star today, the defensive play of Rogan and Dannahe, St. Francis ends, standing out brilliantly. Pat Shields, husky halfback of the visiting team, was principal ground gainer, Major, CBA fullback, also a consistent ball runner.

Another clipping, minus headline, said the following:

Christian Brothers Academy proved a disappointing surprise in the St. Francis de Sales game at Geneva Saturday, when they won by two points only.

The real story is simply a tale of last minute injuries which benched their star backfield and cut the team to pieces. Bishop, Drais and Sheedy were out, leaving only the doughty Major to bear the brunt. Major could not do it all, although he was ably aided by Shields, taken from end.

St. Francis had the fight which prevented the shattered CBA machine from scoring a touchdown. CBA was also handicapped by offside penalties.

In the face of all these difficulties, the Brothers outplayed Geneva and outrushed the game St. Francis crew. When Drais, Bishop and Sheedy return to the fold, there will be a different story to tell in the ramaining games for CBA is about ripe to come through. They should end up this rather rubious season with several glorious victories and they will do it if all goes as is expected. Major is their ace and Major is looked to by the fans to lead the team to a spectacular finish.

The North State St. boys were treated royally at Geneva after the game by the St. Francis management, being taken to the Hobart-Bucknell game, and tendered a supper and dance at night.

Note: One Syracuse newspaper consistently referred to CBA's downtown location at Willow Street; another newspaper just as consistently called the team "the North State St. boys." As I recall, it was six of one, half-dozen of the other because I believe the school was located at the intersection of those two streets, though I don't recall which street the school's front door might have faced.

Scanned from a newspaper clipping pasted in the scrapbook. The left-half of the photo was torn. Pictured here are most of CBA's key players from the 1923 season.
