PART 6
DRAIS SUFFERS CUT OVER EYE IN GRID DRILL
CBA Captain May Not Play
Against Oswego Outfit
By BILL JOHNSTON
Hopes for another CBA championship to result from tomorrow’s game between CBA and Oswego High were given a jolt today when it was learned that Capt. Sam Drais, quarterback, would probably be missing from the lineup because of a severe cut over the eye suffered during practice yesterday.

Drais was injured in a hot scrimmage with the second team in which he was tearing through for great gains. He was taken to a doctor who sewed up the wound, requiring seven stitches to close.

Coach Culver would not say who he will play at quarter in Drais’ place, although he has but two choices, Tommy Mack or Joe McDermott, either of whom is a capable performer.

McDermott was regular quarter for the first three games this year but had been shifted to end where he was making good with a vengeance. Mack is second string quarter, only slightly inferior to Drais in ability.

Major, regular fullback, was calling signals after Drais’ retirement, but it is not probable that he will draw the assignment with two such men as McDermott and Mack in readiness.

The most important game of the season for CBA finds them in perfect shape except for Drais. The lineup will be the same which faced Oswego Normal last week.

Oswego is planning to bring 500 rooters to cheer their team on but CBA will turn out as one man and the legion of city fans is expected to jam Star Park.

Game will be called promptly at 10:30 with Sim Wolf refereeing as usual.

There are four newspaper accounts of the game. The first one may be from the Syracuse Journal.

CBA Wins Sectional Title By Defeat of Oswego, 7 to 6

Championship of Central and Northern New York Third for Brothers

The Christian Brohers Academy eleven is champion of the Central and Northern New York Football League today for the third consecutive season.

Yesterday, led by Buster Major, husky backfield man and acting captain, CBA fought its way to a 7 to 6 victory over the light but speedy Oswego High School eleven at Star Park, winning the league trophy for the third straight year.

Two long runs, both of which ended in touchdowns, featured the game. Major, playing quarterback in place of Capt. Sam Drais, who is on the injured list, ran 80 yares for a touchdown in the opening period and later kicked the goal after touchdown, which proved to be the margin of victory.

In the fourth period, when the Purple and Gold warriors were forging toward their second touchdown, Captain Bill Hunt of Oswego scooped up Major’s fumble on his own 2-yard line and raced 98 yads for the second score of the game, but later failed in his try for the extra point. The ball sailed wide of the goal posts by four feet.

The going was hard for both teams as the heavy frost of the night before had left the field in a muddy condition.

Oswego used a triple pass throughout the game but gained little ground by it whenever it was successful. The CBA ends generally smeared it.

Following this score the two teams fought on nearly even terms in midfield until Major intercepted a triple pass and downed the ball on Oswego’s 41-yard line. Major made a first down on the 31-yard line aided by Sheedy, Bishop and Shields as the quarter ended.

In the second period CBA made two more first downs which brought the ball to the Oswego 8-yard line and CBA had to give it up on downs on Oswego’s one-yard line.

Leroy carried the ball to his own 21-yard line and in trying another triple pass Oswego lost the ball when Shields intercepted it on the 25-yard mark. A penalty for holding was inflicted on Oswego which gave CBA another opportunity to drive for a score, but another penalty put CBA back on its haunches on the Oswego 25-yard line and the half ended.

The third quarter: Oswego tried another pass and it was intercepted by Eisemann. CBA then by aid of a 20-yard pass and crossbuck play put the ball on the Oswego 10-yard line. Major tried a dropkick over the goal posts but it was wide.

The fourth quarter: CBA started a march from the Oswego 41-yard line after Hunt had kicked out of bounds and put the ball on the Oswego two-yard line when Major fumbled and Hunt scooped it up and traveled 98 yards. His failure at kicking the goal cost Oswego at least a tie score.

CBA got the ball on the kickoff again and were driving the Oswego line hard when the game ended.

CBA Repeatedly Menaces Visitors’
Goal, but Lacks Final Punch

Displaying the same indomitable spirit which won it the scholastic championship of Syracuse last year, the sturdy little CBA eleven triumped over the Oswego High gridders at Star Park yesterday by the score of 7 to 6 in the championship game of the North-Central high school league.

The Academy warriors’ score is unsatisfactory evidence of the Brothers’ superiority over the Oswego pigskin tossers. The Academy lost the ball three times on the threshold of the goal, twice in the second period when the locals were stopped within a foot of the line, and again in the final period when Major fumbled on the one-yard line. The last play gave the Oswego team its tally when Hunt, tackle, scooped it up and sprinted 99 yards for a touchdown, but failed to kick the goal.

Too Much Major

Too much Major was the paramount reason for Oswego’s defeat, the husky quarter gaining consistently and scoring the CBA touchdown as well as making the placement kick for extra point. The Brothers’ eleven seemed far the superior of the Oswego warriors in every play except the critical ones, where the Academy lacked the final punch.

Major kicked off in the opening period to the Oswego team who, after failing to obtain first downs in three plays, punted the ball to Major on the Academy 20-yard line. The speedy quarterback encircled the oval with his arms and brushing aside tackler after tackler, raced straight down the field for a touchdown. He made the extra point with a perfect boot over the center of the crossbar.

Major again kicked off and when the Oswego gridders again could not gain and punted, Major started down the field for another touchdown. But it was then that fortune deserted him and unable to find substantial footing on the soft, muddy field, he slipped after running from his own 20-yard line to Oswego’s 40 and although his path to a touchdown had been clear prior to his tumble, before he could arise, three hardy Oswego backs were upon him.

The Academy then lost the ball on downs but recovered it when Major intercepted a pass and advanced it to the 30-yard line as the quarter ended.

Major opened the second period by sending a pass to McDermott, who was dropped on the 13-yard line. Major, Bishop and Shields combined gains to secure first downs on the three-yard line, but in the next four downs only about two and two-thirds yards could be assimilated by the combined efforts of the Brothers’ backfield and they surrendered the pigskin on the six-inch line.

Oswego Goes 25 Yards

Oswego advanced the ball 25 yards and fumbled, the ball being recovered by the Academy quarter who himself fumbled the ball on the next play. Oswego was unable to gain, however, and punted to Shields on the 25-yard line. Two downs failed to gain sufficiently and the Academy was about to attempt a placement kick as the whistle shrilled, robbing to Brothers of an attempt at an easy field goal.

At the opening of the third period the locals advanced the ball to the Oswego 18-yard line, gains being made by every member of the CBA backfield, but luck was against the Academy and a placement kick missed by many yards.

Oswego then registered a first down, but when Snyder punted outside on the Oswego 42-yard line, the locals started their last furious attack which carried the ball to the Oswego 26-yard line as the third period terminated.

Again It Was Major

Major carried the pigskin to the 20-yard line on the first play of the closing period and Sheedy and Major combined gains to carry the ball to the 3-yard line. On the next play Major went over the line, but dropped the ball on the one-yard line where Hunt, Oswego tackle, recovered it and sped down the field 99 yards for the Oswego tally. He appeared quite exhausted and his failure to make the placement kick may be attributed to this fact to some extent. The kick missed by inches.

The CBA gridders headed in attack by Bishopo, Major and Sheedy were advancing the ball slowly down the field when the closing whistle blew having received it on the 24-yard line.

Probably from The Herald or another Syracuse daily:
CBA TEAM CONQUERS OSWEGO IN BITTER GRIDIRON CONTEST

By DAVID BRUCE
An eighty-yard run by Major of CBA in the opening minutes of play and a 98-yard run by Hunt of Oswego in the closing moments and attempts at placement kicks after the touchdowns by the same players decided today’s championship game in the CBA-Oswego-Fulton League between Syracuse’s Christian Brothers Academy and Oswego High School. CBA nosed out the Oswego team, 7 to 6. Both of the long runs resulted in touchdowns.

The Oswego High team surprised sports followers by checking the CBA defense. For the most part the play was in midfield. Twice, however, CBA got within a few feet of the Oswego goal line, but failed to score. Marshall and Hunt starred for Oswego. Major was the outstanding star in the CBA lineup and game.

As Referee Storier tooted his whistle, Major of CBA kicked off to Oswego. On the third play Oswego faked a kick and gained enough for a first down. Fighting mad, the CBA line refused to let the Oswego team gain and Hunt, Oswego tackle, punted to Major. Major caught the ball on his own twenty-yard line and ran eighty yards for a touchdown with McDermott at his side forming perfect interference. Major kicked a clean placement kick for the extra point.

Not discouraged, although they were on the short end of the score with the game but a few minutes old, the Oswego team battled the Syracuse lads until their “break” came.

At the start of the second quarter, McDermott of CBA concealed himself on the edge of the field and was the recipient of a pass which advanced the CBA team about 20 yards. In the closing minutes of a second quarter the CBA team was on the three-yard line and had four downs to “use up” the distance, but could not score. The Oswego team made a wonderful stand at this time, the ball being placed within inches of the goal line by CBA.

Major took the ball in the final quarter on the opponents three-yard line. It seem impossible that he would not score – he fumbled and Hunt of Oswego ran ninety-eight yards for a touchdown. His placement kick went wide and the score as it did at the end of the game.

Hunt’s run was most thrilling. When within twenty yards of the CBA goal, Hunt stumbled but managed to stay upon his feet after a bit of effort.

Perhaps from an Oswego newspaper:
OSWEGO BOWS TO CBA BY 7-6 SCORE
In a close fought football contest Saturday morning, Christian Brothers Academy defeated Oswego High by a score of 7 to 6. Major, quarterback for CBA, was the outstanding star of the day, scoring his team’s only touchdown and kicking the goal that decided the victory.

A muddy field slowed up the play considerably, and was responsible for many slips and fumbles for both teams.
Shortly after the kick-off in the first quarter Major received a punt on his own 20-yard line and dashed 80 yards for a spectacular touchdown. He kicked goal, adding the extra point that was the deciding factor in the game.

CBA a few minutes later in the second quarter was given a second chance to put the pigskin across the opposing goal line and failed by inches. Immediately following Oswego made two first downs in quick succession before being forced to kick. The half ended with the score 7 to 0 in favor of CBA.

Late in the fourth quarter CBA carried the ball down to Oswego’s five-yard line. On the play that seemed like a touchdown for the local team, a costly fumble was made, Hunt of Oswego picking up the ball and dashing 95 yards for a touchdown. Oswego failed to kick goal and the game ended a few minutes later with a win for CBA.
