Buster Major's scrapbook:
CBA football 1923

Part 3
[NOTE: Much of the following story makes little sense, but except that I tinkered with the paragraphing, it is just as the newspaper – perhaps the Syracuse Post-Standard – published it.]

CBA beaten by Norwich in
close struggle

Andreas eleven scores 7-0 victory
by series of crash attacks

Dwyer rips shoulder

Visitors stage remarkable
defensive in last period

NORWICH, OCT. 13 – CBA, defeated last year by Norwich 6 to 0, received its second setback here today when Andreas’ team conquered them, 7 to 0, in the finest exhibition of scholastic football ever witnessed in Norwich.

Visitors, tho outweighing Norwich man to man, were powerless before crashing attacks of Andreas’ proteges, who made 17 first downs on them. In the last two minutes of the game Norwich forced the ball to within six inches of goal post only to lose ball when the CBA line held like a stone wall for the first time in game. Three successive downs were made within this distance.

Dwyer, Syracuse center, tore his shoulder ligaments and was forced from game. McDermott and Major led the Syracuse attack and were most formidable at all times.

To Williamson, husky Norwich back, goes the distinction of scoring a touchdown on a smash from the five-yard line. White’s 25-yard end run, followed by 18-yard gain by Captain Manning on line smashes furnished thrills for the first quarter. Shields and Sheedy performed admirably for Syracuse, but penalties for both sides were costly at crucial moments.

Norwich was not in danger until the last quarter with two minutes to go when she lost the ball within six inches of goal post.

First point was scored when CBA had advanced beyond Norwich’s 25-yard line. CBA punted, Captain Tommy Manning receiving the ball on the 50-yard line, and brought it in to the 25-yard line. A penalty against Captain Drais, Syracuse, brought the ball over for the first down, following a six-yard gain by Norwich on a line smash. Another first down by Norwich and Syracuse tightened, holding Andreas’ machine for downs.

McDermott downed in his tracks on first CBA play. McDermott’s punt blocked, Norwich recovering on the 10-yard line. White, Norwich back, took the ball to CBA’s 20-yard line on an end run as the whistle blew.

The Syracuse backfield performed perfectly but failed to withstand the crushing attack of Norwich and only in the final minutes of play did they show effective resistance.

[NOTE: I assume the Norwich coach was Lew Andreas, a former Syracuse University football player who returned to his alma mater as head coach in 1927. Later he became the longtime SU basketball coach and athletic director.]
