Children of Molly Quigley and William McLaughlin Sr.
William McLaughlin Sr. (1793-1853) was born in Ireland and lived on the western shore of the peninsula of Inishowen on the east shore of Lough Swilly (pronounced Sooley) in the hamlet of Linsfort Glebe in the Parish of Desertegny in County Donegal, 14 miles from the city of Londonderry. He and his wife, Molly Quigley (1796-1856), had seven sons and four daughters, several of whom emigrated to the United States.

Their children are listed below. The first nine appear in the birth order provided by the Bible of Rose Ann McLaughlin, who married John Major. Rose was a granddaughter of William and Molly McLaughlin. Her Bible names just nine of her grandparents' children, making no mention of George or Daniel McLaughlin, who are on our list because their names appear in "This History of the McLaughlin Family", written in 1979 by the late Edward F. McLaughlin, Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, who also was descended from William and Molly McLaughlin. That book is the source of most of the material that appears in our McLaughlin family tree.

Branches of this family tree appear on other pages. Overall, there is a lot of missing information. If you have some of it, please let us know. Contact us at JMajor9863@aol.com.

Elizabeth (Betty) McLaughlin 1817-1906
Elizabeth McLaughlin was born in Linsfort, Donegal in Ireland. She married Patrick Doherty and they had seven children. (See Descendants of Elizabeth McLaughlin.)

James "40 Acres" McLaughlin 1821-1911

James McLaughlin (1821-1911) and his wife, Ann McKinney (1822-1888), were the first members of the family to leave Ireland for the United States, emigrating in 1848 after the deaths of their three young children, starvation victims during the potato famine.

James and Ann McLaughlin settled in Skaneateles, NY. He bought 40 acres in Skaneateles, started the teasel business, and picked up a new nickname. (See Descendants of James McLaughlin.)

Mary McLaughlin went to England from Ireland. According to Rose McLaughlin Major's Bible, Mary married a man named O'Conner and is buried in Edgefield Oldham County, England.

18??-1911

Cornelius McLaughlin left his home in County Donegal, Ireland, in 1866, and took his son, William, to Skaneateles, NY. He returned to Ireland, but left William with one of Cornelius's brothers, James "40 Acres" McLaughlin Sr.

Cornelius, perhaps better known as Neal McLaughlin, died on Easter Sunday in 1911. He had at least six other children, five of whom eventually settled in the United States, four of them in Skaneateles where their brother William was living. (See Descendants of Cornelius McLaughlin.)

Ellen McLaughlin (1832- ??)

Ellen McLaughlin m. Timothy Donohue. According to "This History of the McLaughlin Family," Ellen and Timothy Donohue lived in Schenectady. However, an obituary for a Timothy Donohue in the Auburn Citizen (Aug. 13, 1913) says Donohue (1833-1913) was born in Ireland and lived in Skaneateles for about 60 years and was the sexton to St. Mary's Cemetery. His widow was identified as the former Helen McLaughlin. Through reading many newspaper obituaries during my family research, I've noticed it's quite common for names to be misspelled or confused, particularly if the story was dictated to someone. The names Helen and Ellen would invite such confusion.

Among Timothy Donohue's other survivers were three sons, including Timothy E. Donohue who did live in Schenectady. His other sons were John P. Donohue of Fulton and Robert D. Donohue of New York City. He also was survived by a daughter, Anna Donohue of Skaneateles

In one of several name coincidences that have popped up in regard to my family tree, Margaret Major, a daughter of Charles J. Major, married Timothy E. Donohue in Skaneateles Falls, NY, on Aug. 24, 1898. So it was reported in the Skaneateles Press. Her husband appears to be the same Timothy E. Donohue mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Margaret and Timothy Donohue did live in Schenectady, something mentioned several times in the Skaneateles Press, which seemed to keep tabs on the comings and goings of its citizens. Frequently the Donohues would visit the village to see relatives there.

John McLaughlin (1832-1922)

John and Ellen McLaughlin (above) were twins. The 1880 US census lists John McLaughlin as a blacksmith born in Ireland. Notes in a Bible belonging to Rose McLaughlin Major say John McLaughlin arrived in New York from Ireland on Dec. 7, 1851 aboard a ship called Vanguard. He settled in Skaneateles, but moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1858, returning to Skaneateles in May, 1868.

John McLaughlin's first wife, Mary McGrorry, died in 1864 at the age of 30. She is buried in Louisville. Also buried there is their son Willie McLaughlin, who was born Dec. 12, 1858 and survived only 11 days.

John McLaughlin's second wife was Mary Casey (1842-1907). They are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Skaneateles, NY. (See Descendants of John McLaughlin.)

Hugh McLaughlin 1835-1916
Hugh McLaughlin was born in Donegal, emigrated to the United States in 1854. He married Mary J. McCready. They lived in Queens, later moved to Brooklyn where he was engaged in the furniture business. No other information is available.

William McLaughlin (1836-1909) married Mary McHugh (1842-1908) in County Donegal, Ireland. The moved to Skaneateles, NY after the birth of their first child. (See Descendants of William McLaughlin Jr.)

Catherine McLaughlin (1840-1891) m. Patrick Curtin in Limerick, Ireland. Rose McLaughlin Major's Bible notes that Kate's daughter, Alice, died Aug. 3, 1879. No other information available.

George McLaughlin was born in Linsfort, County Donegal, Ireland. I've seen no year of birth. One source says he emigrated to the United States and became a doctor in Philadelphia. I've found nothing to verify this. There may be confusion resulting from this unusual situation:

The 1880 census lists a Dennis McLaughlin (1858-1909) living in Skaneateles, NY, with James McLaughlin and his family. Dennis McLaughlin was a physician, born in Pennsylvania. His relationship to James McLaughlin is listed as "other." However, in 1880 he became James McLaughlin's son-in-law when he married Margaret McLaughlin, the only American-born daughter of the man known as "40 Acres." Some time after the wedding, Dennis and Margaret McLaughlin moved to Philadelphia. The obituary for Dennis said his father's name as Hugh (not to be confused with the Hugh McLaughlin listed above).
