Descendants of John McLaughlin (1832-1922)
Branches of our Major family tree intersect with descendants of William McLaughlin Sr. (1793-1853). McLaughlin was born in Ireland and lived on the western shore of the peninsula of Inishowen on the east shore of Lough Swilly (pronounced Sooley) in the hamlet of Linsfort Glebe in the Parish of Desertegny in County Donegal, fourteen miles from the city of Londonderry. He and his wife, Molly Quigley (1796-1856), had seven sons and four daughters, several of whom emigrated to the United States. One of their sons, John, had a daughter, Rose, who married John Major. This page is devoted to John McLaughlin and his descendants.
John McLaughlin (1832-1922) was the twin brother of Ellen McLaughlin (about whom I have little information). The 1880 US census lists John McLaughlin as a blacksmith born in Ireland. Notes in a Bible belonging to Rose McLaughlin Major say John McLaughlin married Mary McGrorry, also from Desertegny, and that they sailed for the United States in 1851, arriving in New York on Dec. 7 aboard a ship called Vanguard. They settled in Skaneateles, but moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1858.
They had a son, Willie McLaughlin, who survived only 11 days after he was born, Dec. 12, 1858. Mary McGrorry McLaughlin died in Louisville in 1864 at the age of 30. She and Willie are buried in Louisville's Portland Cemetery. (Note: McGrorry is the way Rose Major spelled the name; the correct spelling might well be McGrory.)
John McLaughlin returned to Skaneateles in 1868. His second wife was Mary Casey (1842-1907). They are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Skaneateles, NY. We found five children for John and Mary Casey McLaughlin in the 1880 census – John, Catherine, Rose, Eliza (Elizabeth) and Ellen. |

They lived in Auburn, New York. The newspaper obituary said her early death was unexpected, that she began her last day feeling well, then became sick and died about five hours later. I did not find a cause listed. There were five children who survived Kate McLaughlin Deacy. I am not sure of their birth order. |

A native of Auburn, he lived several years in Port Byron and was a resident of Beaver Dams, NY, when he died. He was a state corrections officer for 21 years, the last 12 of which were spent at Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Beaver Dams. This is a minimum-security camp, without fences or walls, on 10,000 acres of state forest land in Schuyler County. In 1987 it became New York's first "shock incarceration" facility. Inmates still perform forestry work, but the facility is more widely regarded as a "boot camp." |

Elizabeth (Eliza) McLaughlin (1874-1922) m. Martin Roe (18??-1941)
Her death notice in a Syracuse newspaper spelled her married name Rowe. His obituary in the Auburn Citizen-Advertiser (August 26, 1941) spelled it Roe, which was supported by most newspaper articles I found. He was a native of Skaneateles, lived several years in Auburn, then moved to Syracuse where he died. His obituary said he was survived by his wife, who must have been his second. No name was mentioned. I believe the two children who survived him were from his marriage to Elizabeth McLaughlin. Also, Frances Roe (1895-96) is buried in the same plot at St. Mary's Cemetery, Skaneateles, as John and Mary McLaughlin. I do not know if this is coincidence or if John and Mary McLaughlin were the grandparents of the tragic child. |

Mary Ann "Marie" Roe (1903-1996) m. William Hoppe
This is an educated guess. Martin Roe's obituary referred to his daughter as Mrs. William Hoppe. I remember Marie Hoppe from countless reunions, but was too young to figure out how she fit into the family. Now I think I've got it. She was born in Auburn, but lived most of her adult life in Syracuse. She worked for many years at Pass & Seymour in Solvay. |

Ellen McLaughlin (1876- )
Ah, but if there's a family mystery, Ellen McLaughlin is at the center of it.
The death notice for Mary McLaughlin (Auburn Citizen, March 29, 1907) says the deceased was the mother of Mrs. Martin Roe, Mrs. John Deacy ... and Mrs. C. Crofut.
The obituary for John McLaughlin (Auburn Citizen, April 13, 1922) says the deceased was the father of Mrs. John Major, Mrs. Martin Roe, Mrs. John Deacy ... and Mrs. Glenn Smith.
However, when Rose McLaughlin (Mrs. John) Major died in 1941, her only surviving sister was referred to as ... Mrs. Nell Corbett. When Kate McLaughlin Deacy died in 1928 one of her bearers was Frank Corbett. I do not know if there is a connection, though I saw one reference to Frank Corbett being a grandson of John McLaughlin. |
