Descendants
of Cornelius "Neal" McLaughlin
William McLaughlin Sr. (1793-1853) was born in Ireland and lived on the western shore of the peninsula of Inishowen on the east shore of Lough Swilly (pronounced Sooley) in the hamlet of Linsfort Glebe in the Parish of Desertegny in County Donegal, 14 miles from the city of Londonderry. He and his wife, Molly Quigley (1796-1856), had seven sons and four daughters, several of whom emigrated to the United States. One of their sons was Cornelius "Neal" McLaughlin.
Cornelius left his home in County Donegal, Ireland, in 1866, and took his 13-year-old son, William, to Skaneateles, NY. He returned to Ireland, but William reamined in Skaneateles, living with one of Cornelius's brothers, James "40 Acres" McLaughlin Sr.
Cornelius McLaughlin died on Easter Sunday in 1911. |

Cornelius (Neal) McLaughlin (18??-1911)
I believe Cornelius was better known as Neal McLaughlin and that five more of his children emigrated to the United States. William remains the only one listed in this family tree, but the obituary reprinted at the bottom of this page would seem to indicate William had two brothers and two sisters in Skaneateles, plus another sister in Chicago. |

William
McLaughlin (1861-1936) m. Margaret Flynn (1861-1933)
According to "This History of the McLaughlin Family," William worked for Summit View Farm located on a hill west of Skaneateles. Later William moved his family to Syracuse where he was employed as a machinist.
We believe this William and one who was born to James and Ann McLaughlin sometimes are regarded as one and the same person. Their birth years may be the same, but this William was born in Ireland, his cousin William was born in Skaneateles and later became involved in one of the family's strangest and most tragic stories. (See William McLaughlin: Lost ... and Found.)
I know this is supposed to be an exact science, with statements supported by birth and death certificates, but my guess is that this William – that is, the son of Neal McLaughlin – was born in 1861 and died in 1936, since two bodies listed as Father and Mother share a St. Mary's Cemetery plot with four of the children listed below. Though they don't exactly agree with dates I was given by other sources, the birth years for William and Margaret McLaughlin that I've used above correspond with cemetery records.
Other sources indicate William was born in 1853. However, I believe the William McLaughlin who was born in 1853 was the son of James "40 Acres" McLaughlin.
Margaret Flynn's birthyear is listed elsewhere as 1862. She was the daughter of Dennis and Mary Flynn and the sister of Michael and James.
Margaret and William McLaughlin had six children:

I believe the Neal McLaughlin mentioned in the following obituary is the same person as Cornelius McLaughlin, son of William and Molly McLaughlin.
From the Skaneateles Press, July 29, 1910:
John N. McLaughlin died at his home at Skaneateles Falls shortly after 1 o’clock, July 27, 1910 in the 45th year of his age. About three weeks ago Mr. McLaughlin went to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse, for treatment, returning about 10 days ago. His death was caused by a bloodclot on the brain.
Deceased was born August 1, 1863 in Linsfort, Ireland, and came to this town when 20 years of age, finding employment in the Glenside woolen mills, of late years being in charge of the press room. He was an industrious man and a kind husband, accommodating neighbor and a good citizen.
He leaves his wife, formerly Miss Annie Keenan, his aged parents Mr. and Mrs. Neal McLaughlin of Linsford, Ireland; three brothers, William McLaughlin and Edward McLaughlin of this town, and Neal McLaughlin of Linsford, Ireland, and three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kershaw and Mrs. Thomas Carrigan of this town, and Mrs. O’Keefe of Chicago.
Services were at St. Mary’s Church, Skanteateles, and burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery. |
