Charles J. Major |
Charles J. Major (1837-1905) was born in County Derry, Ireland, and moved to the United States in 1860, settling in Skaneateles, NY. He married Margaret Mallon (1841-1888) a native of Liverpool, NY. They lived in Skaneateles Falls and had 12 children.
Here is what we have on the descendants of Charles and Margaret Major, going one child at a time. We have little information on most of them and are trying to locate relatives who will help us fill in names of the missing generations. The most complete information concerns the family of Thomas Edward Major, sixth child of Charles and Margaret. This family tree is listed separately.
Like almost everything on this page, that information was researched and provided by Charles Thomas Major Jr. of Skaneateles, a great-grandson of Charles and Margaret Major. All of our family trees are incomplete and may contain some inaccuracies.

| Mary
Major (1861-1943) |
|
| Mary Major married Thomas Coleman (1859-1952) on Nov. 16, 1892 in Skaneateles Falls. They had no children. |
| Anne Jane Major (1863-1931) |
|
Anne Jane Major married Michael J. O'Hara (1856-1934) on June 10, 1891 in Skaneateles Falls. Records at St. Mary's Cemetery in Skaneateles show that Margaret M. O'Hara (1895-1920) is buried next to Anne and Michael O'Hara.
An obituary for Margaret M. O'Hara in the Syracuse Journal said she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. O'Hara and also was survived by two sisters, Lucy A. and Loretta B. O'Hara and two brothers, Charles P. and Joseph F. O'Hara.
I also found a story that said Charles P. O'Hara married Elizabeth Connors in 1919. |
| John J. Major (1868-1922) |
|
John J. Major married Catherine McGinn.
One source said John and Catherine had four children, but I have the name of only one: Margaret Major (1896- ?). Margaret was listed as the only child surviving her father when he died in 1922.
Whether Mrs. Major's first name was spelled Catherine or Katherine is uncertain. I previously had her name spelled Katherine because a 1946 obituary for her brother, Michael McGinn of Skaneateles Falls, referred to her as Mrs. Katherine Major of Rochester. (She had relatives in the Rochester area, which may have prompted her to move there after the death of her husband.) I also found an old newspaper article that referred to her as Katie F. McGinn and a later story that called her Mrs. Katherine Major.
However, the 1900 United States census listed her name as Catherine, as did the 1905 New York State census. St. Mary's Cemetery records also spell her first name with a C.

| Margaret Major (1870-1944) |
|
Margaret Major married Timothy E. Donohue (1868-1953) on Aug. 24, 1898 in Skaneateles Falls.
Records at St. Mary's Cemetery in Skaneateles, NY, show two other Donohues in the plot, Margaret E. Donohue (1900-1976) and Raymond F. Donohue (1904-1958), who were listed as the children of Margaret and Timothy E. Donohue in Mrs. Donohue's obituary in the Auburn Citizen Advertiser (Dec. 6, 1944). Though buried in Skaneateles, the Donohues lived most of their married life in Schenectady where he was employed by the General Electric Company. Their son Raymond Donohue was a detective with the Schenectady Police Department. |
| Thomas Edward Major (1872-1957) |
|
| Thomas Edward Major married Lucinda Ellen McCarthy (1873-1947). They had ten children. Their descendants are listed separately (Thomas Major). |
| Rose Ellen Major (1873-1926) |
|
| Rose Ellen Major married John Reeves. Mr. and Mrs. Reeves lived their married lives in Erie, PA. Her obituary in the Auburn Citizen (June 15, 1926) doesn't refer to her as the widow of John Reeves, nor does it list her husband as one of her survivors. Apparently they did not have any children. The obituary listed the cause of her death as a weakened heart. She had come down with pneumonia about a month before her death. |
| Charles P. Major (1874-1952) |

| [Note: A newspaper clipping in a scrapbook kept by Buster Major told of a baseball team comprised entirely of Major relatives. Unfortunately, not all of the Majors were listed in the article, but one, referred to as Mickey Major, was described as a star player in the State League. The article is not dated, but Buster Major is referred to as a Solvay High School pitcher, which has me guessing the all-Major team was assembled between 1920-22. Since the article also says Mickey Major played in the State League "several years ago," I concluded he and Michael Major are one and the same. Manager of the team was Michael's brother, Thomas, who in the 1890s played on a Skaneateles Falls baseball team called The Glensides. One of his teammates was John Major, Buster's father. In Central New York, baseball and the name Major were synonymous. – JACK MAJOR] |
